Lantau Guide
Everything you need to know about Lantau
Lantau is Hong Kong's largest island and is located to the west of Hong Kong Island itself. It has convenient transport links to all major locations including Kowloon, New Territories and Hong Kong. Because of these excellent links many Lantau residents are daily commuters. Lantau offers a lifestyle that is far removed from that of most of Hong Kong with its tranquil beaches, camping and hiking opportunities, and the general atmosphere is very relaxing – think mountains, greenery, rice fields, water buffalos and old fishing villages.
Where to Stay in Lantau
A lot of Lantau is still rural and most locals live a very simple life. Parts of the island were galvanized after the Hong Kong International Airport opened in 1997. Then there is Hong Kong Disneyland, the mega private residential of Discovery Bay and more development in Tung Chung New Town. To accommodate both business persons and leisure visitors, Lantau has various choices of hotels to offer including Disney's Hollywood Hotel and the Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel.
Lantau Island is a unique destination where the old and the new interact. Most parts are decidedly rural and as a result Lantau is a haven for hikers and trekkers, many heading up Lantau Peak (the highest mountain on the island) rising more than 900 metres. On top of that, Lantau is home to Hong Kong Disneyland, the Ngong Ping 360 cable car ride, the famous Giant Buddha (aka the Tian Tan Buddha Statue) and Tai O traditional fishing village. Read more...
There are not many places in Hong Kong that can match Lantau for bringing people and nature together. Visitors can participate in many outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming and camping. If you plan carefully, you might be able to accomplish at least a few things (but not all) in one day. For beach lovers, try Silvermine Beach, Cheung Sha Beach and Pui O Beach. Read more...
Lantau Island might not be able to compete with mega-metropolis Hong Kong when it comes to food but there are still quite a few good dining venues to fit most people’s budget there. From the cheap eats at the many Dan Pai Dongs (cheap restaurants) to the more high-end restaurants mostly located at Discovery Bay, east of the island, there's a good range to choose from, and all at friendlier prices. If you are heavily into the bar and club scene, Lantau Island might not be the right place for you. There is no dress code on Friday nights, no ladies' nights nor ‘buy one get one free’ type of promotions around the island. Still, if you follow the locals they always lead visitors to the best venues in town. Bache and China Bear are the most convenient of all as there are located very close to the main pier of Lantau in Mui Wo Village (also referred to as Silvermine Bay). Read more...
