Cheung Chau translates as 'Long Island' and is also referred to as 'Dumbell Island' because of its distinctive shape off Hong Kong's coast. The central part of the island is well developed with many shops and housing and is very difficult to get around in if driving a vehicle because its lanes and streets are somewhat narrow. As a result, municipal vehicles such as fire engines, ambulances and police cars are specially designed in mini versions. Cheung Chau is not the best-known district in town.
