Aqua Spirit is one of the most talked-about rooftop bars in Hong Kong, having opened up on the 29th and 30th floors of the One Peking building at the turn of the millennium. Whilst most lofty bars in Hong Kong rely on good views, Aqua Spirit takes things to a whole new level, with one of the most incredible interior spaces you’ll ever see in a bar… anywhere in the world.
The two-story venue is comprised of two spaces; a luxurious restaurant on the 29th floor and an equally as lavish bar just above. There’s no outdoors terrace, but the breath-taking floor-to-ceiling windows slant at an angle across the entire length of the venue, making for an incredible frame to Hong Kong’s skyline across the water.
After renovation in 2011, Aqua Spirit emerged as one of the most beautiful places to drink and eat in the city. The interior design was done by the London-based and critically acclaimed architecture firm David Collins Studio, and the end result is rather impressive. The abundance of timber through the upper bar area creates a warm, welcoming vibe, with chandeliers, brass fixtures and custom-made leather seats. It all helps to create an air of sophistication superior to almost any other bar in Hong Kong.
Drinks wise, expect a cocktail-heavy menu with an ever-changing array of creative concoctions mixed by the in-house mixologists. A long range of beers, wines and rare spirits are available by the bottle or glass too.
Prices at Aqua Spirit are in line with most other exclusive rooftop bars in Hong Kong. This means beers starting from HK$80, cocktails in the HK$100-150 range, and a minimum charge of around HK$500 per person for dining. There is also a signature collection of five cocktails developed by superstar mixologist Charles Joly, an American bartender who was crowned the Global Bartending Champion in 2014. They cost an eye-watering HK$ 148 each, but that’s the price for this level of exclusivity.
If you come to dine, there is a choice of Italian or Japanese cuisine, both of which are prepared from Aqua Spirit’s two separate kitchens named Aqua Roma and Aqua Tokyo respectively. Signature dishes on the Mediterranean side include Orbetello sea bass carpaccio salad with avocado, crunchy vegetables toasted hazelnuts and lemon foam (HK$ 268) and beef cheek with Porcini mushroom mashed potatoes and Port wine sauce (HK$ 398). Japanese-foodies need look no further than standout dishes such as the baked black cod (HK$ 328) and Taraba crab with udon noodles (HK$ 288), as well as the never-ending supply of freshly-made sashimi and sushi offerings.
