Hong Kong’s Hollywood Road stretches all the way from Hollywood Road Park in Sheung Wan, making its way through the heart of SoHo, past Lan Kwai Fong and finishing in the heart of Central, the busiest and most popular tourist area on the island. The snaking road is famous for many things, and alongside eating, drinking and partying one of the best things to do here is shop – in particularly for antiques and art.
Whilst the surrounding Central area is packed full of gleaming new malls, Hollywood Road itself offers a nice change away from the 21st century air-conditioned havens. The road is famous for being home to an excellent collection of antique and art stores, with most of them centred on and around Cat Street Market. This has also been joined by the up-and-coming fashion boutiques located in PMQ.
You can find the bustling Cat Street by taking a detour off the main Hollywood Road stretch on to Ladder Street, and then take another left onto Upper Lascar Row. It’s at this cute flea market where you’ll find the highest concentration of antiques stores, selling everything from ancient Chinese artefacts, to furniture, lighting, artwork, stunning design installations and of course, Ming vases.
Head down Hong Kong’s Hollywood Road into the more central SoHo district and you’ll find plenty more shops, all alongside some of the city’s most thriving restaurants, cafes and bars. The shopping options here include more antique stores, as well as a few second-hand clothes and vintage stores selling clothing and household items.
Hollywood Road’s buzzing shopping scene is hardly a recent addition to Hong Kong Island. It was here where Chinese traders would come to sell their crafts to the British and Europeans who occupied the area during the colonial rule. Trade continues today just as it did over 60 years ago, and there’s no better place to shop in Hong Kong if you want to find authentic Chinese products and a lively, exciting atmosphere.
Find Hollywood Road in Hong either by taking the MTR to Sheung Wan or Central Station. The road is walking distance from most hotels around the Soho, Lan Kwai Fong and Central area. Most of the shops here open mid morning and close around 22:00 at night, whereas the cocktail bars and fashionable restaurants mean Hollywood Road is still buzzing until way past midnight. Be aware that the streets up here are steep and take a toll on the legs so stop often at the lovely tea shops, and cool bars prevalent in the area.
